The Mug Punter

This is not a memoir of a wildly successful financial tycoon. It is a cautionary tale of what happens when a man applies rigorous, high-level logic (or lack of) leading to completely absurd situations.

It is the story of how my search for the win repeatedly left me flat on my face, sliding on my arse, broke, or listening to floorboards in my underpants. Read on for the whole sorry tale and all will be revealed.

Introduction

The Systematic Fool

Some people are born with natural talents. They can play the piano by ear while others can calculate prime numbers in their sleep. The universe blessed me with a much more dangerous gift: the unwavering, delusional belief that I can outsmart any system.

If there is a shortcut, an exploit, or a "flawless strategy" to be found in everyday life, I will dedicate hundreds of hours to mastering it, usually to save myself twenty minutes of actual work.

My obsession with systems started early. While other children were learning to ride bicycles or making friends, I was analyzing the optimal route through the local supermarket to minimize trolley resistance and avoid small talk with the weirdos. In time, this evolved into a full-blown addiction to a set of structural guidelines waiting for me to find the back door.

Naturally, this made me the most dangerous thing on the internet: a man with a laptop, a dial-up connection, and just enough mathematical knowledge to be a hazard to his own bank account.

To me, the world was a giant spreadsheet waiting to be solved. If a bookmaker offered odds, they weren’t predicting a sporting event; they were issuing a personal challenge to my intellect. If a company offered a promotional discount, they weren't trying to win my loyalty; they were inviting me to bankrupt them through the strategic application of terms and conditions.

Welcome to my life. This is an autobiography or memoir, I am not sure of the difference but I'm still alive if that makes a difference. Anyway, strap in it's gonna be a bumpy ride.
